REPORT ON SYMPOSIUM «EFFECTIVE USE OF WOODY PLANT COLLECTIONS FOR NORTHERN AREAS»

    In the period from the 28th of June through the 1st of July 2011 a meeting entitled: "Effective use of woody plant collections for Northern Areas" organized by the Nordic Arboretum Committee countries and the N.I. Vavilov Research Institute of Plant Industry (VIR) was held in the VIR`s building.

    In course of the meeting there were delivered presentations by both staff members of VIR, V.L. Komarov Botanical Institute under RAS (BIN), Main Botanical Garden named after N.V. Tsitsin under RAS (RAS GBS) and representatives of the Scandinavian (Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland) and Baltic region countries (Lithuania and Estonia) (for further information please see list of reports). During the visit participants had an opportunity to dwell on problems and perspectives of PGR collection preservation, methods of introduction and use of new crops for Nordic region.

    Participants visited VIR`s field genebank of fruit and berry crops located at the Pavlovsk Experiment Station, St. Petersburg State Forest-Technical Academy named after S.M. Kirov as well as Botanical Garden under the V.L. Komarov Botanical Institute.

    At the end of the meeting there was prepared and adopted a resolution, which was read out by Peter M.A. Tigerstedt, professor emeritus at the Helsinki University and member of the Russian Academy of Agriculture Science, during participants` visit to the Pavlovsk experiment station.
